Bike Storage Tips

November and December are perfect times to get your bike ready for the upcoming riding season. If you do not have time to do this yourself, drop your bike off at a local bike shop for a maintenance check before storing it for the winter. Most bike shops have special deals on bike tune-ups during the fall and winter months.

Below are tips for winter storage for mountain, gravel, and road bikes!

Before storage

  • Clean the bike: I like to use warm water with a bit of Dawn Dish Soap to wipe down the frame and remove dirt and grime from all major components. Make sure to rinse with clear water and dry thoroughly.
  • Lubricate the chain: Apply lubricant to protect it from moisture and corrosion.
  • Grease other components: Grease the seatpost to prevent it from seizing, and apply a little grease to other metal components.
  • Inflate tires: Keep tires inflated to prevent flat spots from developing.
  • Inspect the bike: Check for any damage, such as cracks or loose spokes, and make any necessary repairs before storing.

Storage location

  • Indoors is best: Choose a dry location, such as a garage, shed, basement, or inside your home.
  • Avoid moisture and extreme temperatures: Protect the bike from elements like rain, snow, and humidity, which can cause rust and corrosion. Avoid storing near corrosive chemicals, such as fertilizers or pool chemicals, as they can emit harmful gases.
  • Consider space-saving options: Hanging the bike vertically can save floor space and keep tires off the ground. You can use a hook or a specialized wall mount.
  • Use a floor mat: If storing upright on a concrete floor, place a piece of wood or a rubber mat under the tires to prevent moisture from the concrete from drying out or damaging the rubber.
